Obituary of Marvin Paul Jassie
Dr. Marvin Paul Jassie, 84, of Jackson, NJ, died peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Marvin was born in Brooklyn, NY to Nathan and Regina Jassie on September 21, 1931. He graduated James Madison High School at 16 years of age and attended Columbia University, where he obtained both his Bachelor’s and Doctor of Medicine degrees. He interned at Mt. Sinai Medical Center where he met the love of his life, Mary, who was a nursing exchange student from England. Smitten, he asked for her hand in marriage within two weeks. They were married in 1958 while Marvin completed his urology residency in San Francisco, CA. In 1961 they returned to NY, where he conducted medical research, worked at the VA hospital, and served aboard ship in the Coast Guard. In 1963, they moved to Lakewood, NJ, where Marvin joined the Ocean Urology Group and practiced until his retirement in 1995. He was a compassionate and highly skilled physician and surgeon, who was loved and respected by his patients, colleagues, partners, and office staff. He treated them all with kindness and humanity, and cared deeply about each and every one. For all his accomplishments, he remained a humble man, appreciating the simple things in life. He was easygoing, patient, and wise, and listened with his heart, never too busy to lend support to someone in need. In his retirement, Marvin gave his time to the Caregiver Volunteers to support their mission of enabling individuals to remain independent and live with dignity and joy. He was an active member of Congregation Ahavat Olam in Howell. He loved learning and participated in various study groups for many years. Marvin loved spending time with his family, playing tennis, traveling, completing NY Times crossword puzzles with his Mary, and rooting for the Mets and Knicks. He lived his life to the very end with compassion, integrity, grace, and gratitude. His gentle spirit will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Cotton and her husband David, Susan Goodman and her husband Mark, and Anne Weinstein and her husband Jeffrey; five grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Melanie, Alison, Daniel, and Jessica; sister, Bernice London, and many other beloved family members and friends.
