Grandma I want you to know that we will take care of grandpa. We will be okay. Please be at peace and know we love you and will always think of you.
Grandma lived a full life of events. She lived through the Great Depression, World War 2, the Cold World, the rock and roll music of the 60’s, the use of the home computer and the disco music of the 70’s, the use of cell phones and the wild hair of the 80’s, the Macarena movement of the 90’s, 9/11, and the inventions of the early 2000’s including YouTube and Facebook. But most significantly she survived Trump’s Presidency. She lived to see tv aired not only in black and white, but in color.
She had four beautiful children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was a strong woman with an opinion about everything. She loved life. She loved her family.
She had great stories to tell. Once she told me about the time Eleanor Roosevelt came to her school and about the time in Atlantic City when a younger guy tried to hit on her to distract her game. My memories of her include, calling all her grandchildren mama shantz, calling grandpa an old goat, her Thanksgiving salads, the smell of her perfume, and the family pictures in the front room, in Lakewood.
There is also the table in the dining room that would never close easily, always Andrew and Scott on the floor trying to collapse it and grandpa directing them how to close it. That table, no matter how much a pain in the ass it was, meant so much to grandma and grandpa. It was from their Oceanside home, where it was the site of many family dinners.
My dad always talks about how when he and mom were dating, they would go over to grandma and grandpa’s house, and Grandma would be the “Hostess with the Mostess,” always making the most delicious food, in his words, “superb.” My mom told me a story about the time she made something with mustard (my dad hates mustard) and my mom said to grandma that he hates mustard, so grandma said, “shhh don’t tell him.” And guess what, dad thought the meal was amazing.
I learned that she considered Harry Belafonte her favorite singer and Jeopardy her favorite show from Jenna who loved to ask her questions. Jenna does not understand what has happened, but she knows that it is your birthday on Thursday, along with her monkey Josian and my dad’s father. She is so excited about it! I hope that you and my dad’s father will get to celebrate together. Maybe you’ll get to eat some ice cream together! They both loved ice cream! Happy eternal birthday! Happy first birthday in heaven!
Grandma loved to cook and make salads. I know Joanna enjoyed that time with her. When you asked her what her secret to living so long was, she would say eating salads every day, lots of veggies. Also, how about her overstuffed fridge that you could never find space to put something in but she somehow found space, and would say there was plenty of room.
Grandma enjoyed talking to my mom on the phone and my mom yelling “bye dad” loudly at the end of the call, so he would hear.
Grandma, please know we will hold on to these memories and carry them on. We love you! And to everyone, remember that tears are the amount of love you have for someone and we must have tons of love for you grandma because we have not stopped crying since you passed away.
Love, Stephanie
