Obituary of Dr. Dwight N. Halpern
The beloved Dwight Noel Halpern, retired obstetrician gynecologist of Lakewood, New Jersey, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his three children and their spouses, Brian and Karen, Nancy and Andy and Lisa, and his loving caretakers, Lisa and Tina.
Dwight, born on May 29, 1930 in Monticello, New York, grew up in Perth Amboy, New Jersey with his parents, Samuel and Belle Halpern and his younger brother, Merril, whom he shared a special brotherly love. Dwight graduated from Rutgers University in 1952 and later received a medical degree from Hohnemann Medical College. He married Rosalie Cooper, on August 23, 1952 to whom he was devoted during their nearly 58 years of marriage, and even after her death in 2011.
Dwight served in the United States Air Force from 1956-1959 before moving to Lakewood, New Jersey in 1962 where he eventually established Ocean Gynecological and Obstetrical Associates with one of his closest friends and partners, Robert Fabricant, MD. His practice grew to include at least seven physicians who have been and continue to offer comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care to the women of Ocean County for more than 50 years. Dwight specialized in urogynecology and served on the Board of the American Urogynecologic Society in the late 1980’s. He was a past recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from Kimball Medical Center.
Dwight’s passion for medicine was only surpassed by his love for his family, including his eight grandchildren, Danyelle, Samantha, Alyson, Jason, Julia, Jacqueline, Jennifer, and Ethan, and his joy of traveling.
Services were held on Friday, November 25, 2016 at Temple Beth Am Shalom followed by interment at Beth Olam Memorial Park, Lakewood. Donations in Dwight’s memory may be made to The Honorable Rosalie B. Cooper ’52 Fellowship Fund established by Dwight in Rosalie’s memory.
